Successful Parenting – Are You A Great Role Model?
This probably isn’t new to you. Like father, like son. Whether you are a parent or a child, you should know that this is a fact that has been proven by many families. There is a big tendency for children to grow up a lot like their parents. Both their genes and the environment can affect the way a child acts. But since a parent has no control over the genes his child acquires, their concern should be more about the improvement of his environment so that it helps a child become what they ought to. When it comes to this, there is no need for parents to look farther than themselves. After all, parents serve as the most powerful role models for their kids. This means that mothers and fathers who aim to hone their parenting skills should strive harder to become good role models. Practicing what you preach is a lesson that parents should first learn and apply before they can get their children to do as they are taught.
These days, disciplining children is a subject that is widely discussed among a lot of families. However, what parents tend to forget is that of equal importance is disciplining themselves. Obviously, it is not simple as one thinks. To achieve this means that one should be of strong character. Surely, it won’t be much of a problem telling your son to keep his cool amidst his anger, seeing how his younger brother messes up his room. But controlling your own anger when he does something you don’t approve is a challenge that you would not probably take on. So when you show yourself incapable of being in control, then don’t expect him to do otherwise. If your goal is to see a total transformation in your child, then learn to transform your negative ways first. If there is a habit you would like your son to quit, say smoking, you should make sure you yourself don’t smoke.
Kids of this generation need more than a parent preacher to tell them what is good or bad. They can profit more from moms and dads who can practice what they preach. It will be easier to attain your positive parenting goal which is to raise empowered and confident children, if you can model a positive sense of well-being. Always remember that physical traits aren’t the only things you can pass on to your children. With your genes come also behavioral influences that can make or break them. But far more importantly, how you act in front of them can say a lot about what they would grow up to be.
