Many adults believe that it is the fusing of the bones that causes them to lose their flexibility—they believe that the individual bones gave them better ranges of motions. Think about it: how often are you able to eat your own feet as a grown up? All babies know how to hold their breath and how to swim when they are born. This is also something that your baby will rapidly forget as well. Because babies are born knowing these things, many people believe that women should have water births. The basic belief is that since babies are “swimming” in their mothers’ wombs as they develop, being born into a pool of water is supposed to make the transition easier. They believe that a “regular” birth in a brightly lit hospital room is far more traumatic for the baby and that it makes it harder for them to accept that they are no longer physically a part of their mothers.

Everybody knows that babies use crying to communicate their need for service or attention but did you know that the baby does not cry real tears until he or she is almost a month old? Tears are made up of water and hormones that are excreted when a person is under stress. To calm itself down, the body tries to get rid of the stress induced hormones and forces the tears out of the tear ducts (aka crying). Babies do not produce these hormones before birth. Some babies do not start producing this hormone for a few weeks. Still other babies can take up to a few months to show signs of actual tears (remember, every baby is different).
